Protecting the Chyulu Hills Cloud Forest

The Chyulu Hills, located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro in southeast Kenya, hold a critical cloud forest that provides water for local communities, wildlife, and Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city.
Halting the destruction of forests like Chyulu is one of the best ways to rapidly combat climate change, while providing benefits for local communities. The Chyulu Hills project establishes a carbon offset system which creates economic opportunities for local communities. These offsets prevent the deforestation of Chyulu, balancing out the emissions of carbon-intensive activities.
